“Debt map” highlights border counties

StubbsGazette’s 2014 “Debt Map” which surveys the number and value of judgments by county is a treasure trove of information for those who like to ascribe particular characteristics to geographic locations.

Naturally, more populous counties such as Dublin see the largest number of judgments. But, as the statistics below attest, this does not equate with value. Indeed, the median value of judgments in Dublin at €5,230 is at the lower end of the scale, as compared with Monaghan which clocks in at €47,166.

Indeed, anecdotal evidence of the level of debt in the border counties is fully borne out by this analysis that shows Donegal, Roscommon, Longford and Monaghan as among the most heavily indebted in the country.

One of the most striking features of the leaders in insolvency scheme applicants is that the figures seem to bear little resemblance to overall levels of debt. In fact, it would appear that there is a correlation between counties with high applications and the existence of prominent and professional personal insolvency practitioners (PIPs) in those same counties.
